Privacy Policy

Overview

Joteocalculator.com (“Joteo”, “we”, “us”) is a free collection of online calculators and unit converters, operated from Palakkad, Kerala, India. This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you use the website, which third-party services are involved, how cookies and browser storage are used, and what choices and rights you have. It applies to every page under joteocalculator.com, including our calculators, converters, author pages and our static pages.

Information we do not collect

We do not ask for, and do not knowingly collect, any of the following through the website:

• Your name, email address or postal address (unless you choose to email us, see Contacting us and job applications below)
• Account credentials, because there are no user accounts
• Payment or financial account information
• The values you enter into calculators and converters

Calculations and conversions run as JavaScript inside your browser. The values you enter and the results you see are not transmitted to our servers, and we do not store them. The site search also runs in your browser, using an index downloaded to your device, so the words you search for are not sent to us.

Information collected automatically

Like almost every website, the systems that deliver Joteo to you, and the analytics tools described below, automatically receive some technical information when your browser requests a page. This can include:

• Your IP address (which can indicate an approximate location)
• Browser type and version, operating system and device type
• Screen size and language settings
• The page you came from (referrer) and the pages you view
• Dates and times of requests

We use this information only to keep the site working and secure, to understand which calculators are useful, and to improve them. We do not use it to identify you personally, and we do not build individual profiles.

Google Analytics 4

If you allow analytics, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4), a web analytics service from Google, to measure traffic and understand how visitors use our pages. GA4 does not load until you agree. It collects:

• Page views and interaction events (for example, which calculator was opened)
• Device and browser information
• Approximate location at country, region or city level
• Traffic source, such as a search engine or a link from another site
• A pseudonymous identifier stored in a first-party cookie, used to tell repeat visits apart

Google acts as a data processor for this data under its own Privacy Policy and may process it on servers outside your country. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, using a content blocker, or blocking cookies in your browser.

Microsoft Clarity

If you allow analytics, we use Microsoft Clarity, a behavioural analytics tool, to see how visitors interact with our pages so we can find confusing layouts and broken interactions. Clarity does not load until you agree. It collects:

• Interaction data such as clicks, taps, mouse movement and scroll depth, which can be shown to us as anonymised session replays and heatmaps
• Page and navigation data
• Device data such as browser, operating system and screen size

Clarity data is processed by Microsoft under the Microsoft Privacy Statement and the Clarity FAQ. As a general precaution, please do not enter sensitive personal information into any web form, on our site or elsewhere.

Advertising, including Google AdSense

Joteo is free to use and is intended to be supported by advertising. Some pages contain reserved space for advertisements. At the time of this update, no advertising scripts or advertising cookies are loaded on our pages, and we plan to display ads through Google AdSense. We publish this section in advance so you know what to expect when ads go live.

How AdSense will work

• Google and its advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites, using Google’s advertising cookies (including DoubleClick cookies).
• In regions where the law requires it, such as the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, personalised ads will only be shown with your consent, and otherwise non-personalised ads will be used. We will use a Google-certified consent management platform for this.
• You can learn how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Your advertising choices

• Manage or turn off personalised ads in Google Ads Settings.
• Opt out of interest-based ads from participating companies at aboutads.info (United States), youronlinechoices.eu (European Union) or networkadvertising.org.
• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings (see below).

We may also include links to products or services with affiliate or referral arrangements. If we do, we will say so on the relevant page, as described in our Editorial Policy. Advertisers and partners have no influence over what our calculators compute.

Cookies and browser storage

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. Browser storage such as localStorage works similarly but is never sent to a server automatically. Joteo itself does not set any first-party cookies for visitors. The cookies below are set by the third-party services described above.

Lifetimes are set by the providers and can change. Cookie names and lifetimes are described further in each provider’s own documentation.

Your cookie choices

The first time you visit, a banner asks whether to allow analytics and advertising. Accept all and Reject all are equally easy to choose, and Customise lets you pick each category. Until you choose, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity are not loaded and set no cookies. Your choice is remembered on your device, and you can review or change it at any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. If you withdraw consent, we stop the tools and remove the cookies they created on our site; data already collected stays with the provider under the retention periods below.

Managing cookies in your browser

All modern browsers let you see, block and delete cookies and site data (usually under Privacy or Security settings), and many let you block third-party cookies only. Blocking analytics or advertising cookies does not stop the calculators from working. If you delete joteo-colour-scheme, the site simply goes back to your device’s default light or dark setting.

Other third-party services

• Maths rendering (KaTeX). To display mathematical formulas we load the KaTeX library from the jsDelivr content delivery network (cdn.jsdelivr.net). Your browser contacts jsDelivr to download it, which means jsDelivr can see your IP address and standard request details. See the jsDelivr privacy policy.
• Fonts. Our fonts are hosted on Joteo itself, so loading them does not contact Google Fonts or any other font service.
• Hosting and delivery. Our website is served through third-party hosting and network providers who process connection information (such as IP address and request headers) to deliver pages, cache content and protect against abuse. They may keep standard server logs.
• Social sharing. Our pages contain share links for Facebook, X and Pinterest. These are ordinary links. Nothing is sent to those services unless you click one, and from then on their privacy policies apply.

Contacting us and job applications

You do not need to give us any personal information to use the calculators. If you choose to email us or use a link on the site that opens your email application (for example, the Contact page or “Report an issue”), we receive your email address, your name if you include it, the content of your message and anything you attach. Our contact form works by opening your own email application; it does not send your message through a form on our servers.

• How we use it: to read and answer your message, to investigate a reported problem, and to keep a record of the conversation.
• Job applications: if you send a CV or other details to careers@joteocalculator.com, we use them only to assess your application and to contact you about it, and we keep them only as long as needed for that purpose.
• Reporting an error: messages sent to editorialdesk@joteocalculator.com are used to review and correct our content, as described in our Editorial Policy.
• Sharing: we do not sell your message or share it with advertisers. It may be seen by our email hosting provider and by the people who help us respond.

Please do not include sensitive information, such as government ID numbers, financial account details or health information, in emails to us.

Embedded calculators and partners

Some organisations embed Joteo calculators on their own websites, and we work with experts, educators and organisations on new tools (see our Partnerships page). The calculators we supply run in the visitor’s browser in the same way as they do on our own site. Partners are responsible for the analytics, cookies and privacy notices on their own websites. If you are a partner or are considering embedding a calculator and have a data protection question, write to partnerships@joteocalculator.com. Organisations that license our calculation engines or use our services under a commercial agreement can write to enterprise@joteocalculator.com.

How we use information

We use the limited information described in this policy to:

• Provide, secure and maintain the website
• Understand which calculators are used and how, and improve them
• Find and fix errors, broken layouts and usability problems
• Respond to your messages and requests
• Show advertising that helps keep the site free (once advertising is live)
• Meet our legal obligations and protect our rights

Where the law of your country requires a legal basis for processing, we rely on our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving a free website, on your consent where consent is required (for example, for analytics or personalised advertising cookies in some regions), and on our need to comply with the law.

How information is shared

We do not sell personal information. We do not share it except in these limited cases:

• Service providers. Google (Analytics and, later, AdSense), Microsoft (Clarity), jsDelivr and our hosting and network providers receive the technical data described above, each under its own privacy policy and terms.
• Legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, court order or a valid request from a public authority, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Joteo, our users or others. Legal notices should be sent to legal@joteocalculator.com.
• Business changes. If Joteo is reorganised, merged or transferred, information we hold, such as email correspondence, may transfer to the successor, who will be bound by this policy.
• Aggregate statistics. We may publish or share summary figures, such as which calculators are most popular, that do not identify anyone.

International data transfers

Joteo is operated from India, and Google, Microsoft and our hosting providers run infrastructure around the world. Data about your visit may therefore be processed on servers outside your own country, including in the United States and India. These providers use safeguards for cross-border transfers, such as standard contractual clauses, described in their own privacy documentation. By using the site you understand that your information may be transferred in this way.

Data retention

Joteo does not run its own database of visitors or their activity, so most retention is set by the providers we use:

Data security

Our website is served over HTTPS, so traffic between your browser and Joteo is encrypted. Because there are no user accounts and no server-side storage of calculator inputs, there is very little personal information for us to protect. We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect the information we do hold, such as email correspondence, and we rely on Google, Microsoft and our hosting providers for the security of the systems they operate. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

If you believe you have found a security vulnerability, or you think personal information has been exposed, please report it right away to security@joteocalculator.com. Our machine-readable contact details are also published at /.well-known/security.txt. Please give us reasonable time to fix a problem before disclosing it publicly.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights over personal information we hold about you: to know what we hold and to receive a copy, to correct it, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to its use, to withdraw consent, and to complain to a regulator. Because Joteo has no accounts and no database of visitors, the personal information we hold is usually limited to correspondence you have sent us. Requests about analytics or advertising data are best made to the providers directly, using the opt-out tools above, because they hold that data.

European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland

Under the GDPR and similar laws you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and data portability, and the right to withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

California and other US states

Residents of California and some other US states may have the right to know, delete and correct personal information and to opt out of its sale or sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information. Once advertising is live, third-party advertising cookies may count as “sharing” in some states, and we will provide the opt-out choices those laws require. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

India

Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and related rules, you have the right to access information about your personal data, to request its correction, completion, updating and erasure, to have your grievances addressed, and to nominate another person to exercise your rights if you die or become unable to do so. You may also complain to the Data Protection Board of India once it is operational and you have first raised the matter with us.

How to make a request

Email privacy@joteocalculator.com from the address you used to contact us, say which right you want to use and give enough detail for us to find the information. We may ask you to confirm your identity before acting on a request, so that we do not give your information to the wrong person. We will respond within the time required by the law that applies to you, and we will tell you if we cannot do what you ask and why.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

There is no consistent industry standard for “Do Not Track” browser signals, and our analytics services do not currently change their behaviour in response to them. Where the law requires us to honour a legally recognised opt-out signal, such as Global Privacy Control, we will do so. In the meantime you can use the opt-out tools and browser controls described above.

Children’s privacy

Joteo is a general-audience website and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or from anyone under the older age at which local law requires a parent’s consent, and we do not direct advertising at children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us personal information, please email privacy@joteocalculator.com and we will delete it.

External links

Our pages link to other websites, including references, official sources and social media profiles. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our analytics, advertising or hosting setup changes, notably when Google AdSense goes live, or when the law changes. The updated policy will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date. If a change is significant we will make it more prominent, for example by adding a notice to the site. Please review this page from time to time.
